Mitchell Elkind: Mental Disorders, Brain Health, and Acute Coronary Syndrome
Mitchell Elkind, Chief Science Officer, Brain Health and Stroke, American Heart Association, shared on LinkedIn:
”Mental Disorders, Brain Health, and Acute Coronary Syndrome: A Holistic View
Emerging research continues to highlight the link between mental health and increased risk for heart disease.
This recent systematic review and meta-analysis—drawing from 25 studies and including more than 22 million participants—found that depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and sleep disorders are all associated with a heightened risk of acute coronary syndrome. Notably, PTSD and sleep disturbances showed particularly significant risk.
Bipolar and psychotic disorders did not significantly increase risk, though.
This research aligns with ongoing efforts by the American Heart Association to elevate the importance of brain health as a central pillar of overall wellness.
The “Life’s Essential 8” framework emphasizes optimizing both heart and brain health, recognizing that mental health directly influences cardiovascular risk and recovery.
Other programs encourage integration of mental health assessments into cardiac care, supporting prevention strategies that address depression, anxiety, PTSD, and sleep disorders as part of the path to better heart outcomes.
These insights reinforce the need for a holistic approach to health—one that bridges the mind and heart–and leverages the latest evidence to inform care.
By prioritizing comprehensive screening and support for mental wellness, health care professionals and patients can work together to reduce risk of heart disease and promote lasting wellbeing.”
