Mohammed Alo: Can Atherosclerosis Progress Even with a Zero Calcium Score

Mohammed Alo, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology at American College of Cardiology, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Guiomar Mendieta et al., published in JACC Journals:

“When using 3DVUS to look inside the arteries of young people, 88% of those whose plaque progressed had a calcium score of 0.

In those whose plaque progressed, the percentage that still had a CAC of 0 was still 76%.

This shows us again that CAC is a much later stage finding.

You can have plenty of soft plaque without calcium.

The study also showed that those whose disease progressed were the oldest and those with the highest LDL-C.”
