Nicolas Hubacz: How Cells Make Room for Their DNA
Nicolas Hubacz, Founder of NH Sponsorships and Clinical Products US West Business Development Manager at Magstim, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Lovro Gudlin et al., published in Nature Cell Biology, adding:
“How Cells Make Room for Their DNA
Genome size varies more than 10,000-fold across eukaryotes. So how does the machinery that separates chromosomes during cell division accommodate such enormous differences?
A study in Nature Cell Biology points to a physical mechanism: chromosome crowding.
Across 25 species, researchers found that the width of the metaphase plate, where chromosomes align before separating, scales approximately with the cube root of genome size.
Total chromosome volume was the main driver of this relationship, with chromosome number playing a secondary role.
Physical modelling and spindle compression experiments showed that crowded chromosomes generate pushing forces against one another, helping determine the plate’s width.
Spindle length is controlled separately by factors including microtubule dynamics, cytoplasmic forces and cell size.
The same scaling relationship held across different numbers of chromosome sets in cell lines, patient-derived cancer organoids and meiotic systems.
These findings help explain how cells accommodate vastly different amounts of DNA, offering insight into cell division across species and how tumours tolerate extra chromosome sets.”
