”How common — and how serious — is postoperative bleeding after heart transplantation?

In a great collaborative study between the teams from Rennes and La Pitié-Salpêtrière, published in Anesthesiology Journals , we analyzed 446 adult heart transplant recipients.
25% developed severe postoperative bleeding (UDPB ≥3)
Key risk factors included long-term mechanical circulatory support, lower preoperative hemoglobin, and longer cardiopulmonary bypass duration
Severe bleeding was associated with a significantly higher 1-year mortality (35% vs 13%)
Severe hemorrhagic complications after heart transplantation are frequent and have a major impact on outcomes.”
