Peter Bou Dib: How Lipocalin-2 Shapes the Immune Response After Stroke
Peter Bou Dib, Key Account Manager at Sino Biological Europe, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Alexandra Lucaciu et al, published in bioRxiv, adding:
”Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) profoundly changes the body’s immune landscape, leaving patients vulnerable to infections.
A recent research by Alexandra Lucaciu et al. uncovers a key player in this process: Lipocalin-2 (LCN-2).
In the hours and days following stroke, LCN-2 surges in spleen macrophages, reshaping the immune response.
These macrophages form close contacts with T cells, dampening their activity and altering monocyte behavior towards a tolerogenic state, less inflammation, more phagocytosis, but reduced oxidative burst.
This shift, seen in both mice and humans, helps explain why stroke patients become immunosuppressed and prone to infections.
Understanding LCN-2’s role opens a new path to potentially reduce post-stroke infections by targeting this molecular switch.
Science is bringing us closer to therapies that not only save brains but also protect the body.”
