Reem Hal Shares New Clinical Capsule: Thrombosis in Cancer Patients
Reem Hal, Senior Pediatric Oncology Clinical Pharmacist at Borg El Arab Main University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Clinical Capsule | Oncology Rounds
Capsule #5 – Thrombosis in Cancer Patients
‘The cancer didn’t cause the ICU admission — the missed prophylaxis did.’
A patient with multiple myeloma on
lenalidomide + dexamethasone
missed thromboprophylaxis →
acute myocardial infarction. ICU admission.
Clinical Pearl
IMiD-based regimens dramatically increase thrombotic risk.
Standard practice
- Low risk → Aspirin
- High risk → LMWH or DOAC
Missed prophylaxis may lead to
- MI or stroke
- Treatment interruption
Take-home message
In multiple myeloma, thromboprophylaxis is not optional — it is life-saving.”
