Rutendo Muzambi: Hospital Admission Patterns and Care Disparities in Sickle Cell Disease

Rutendo Muzambi, Wellcome Trust Fellow at Imperial College London, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authors, published in Nature, adding:

“Our paper comparing hospital admissions among people living with sickle cell, cystic fibrosis, and haemophilia is now published:

We identified important disparities in several indicators of quality of care in hospitals.

People with sickle cell experienced:

  • More frequent planned hospital admissions over time
  • A higher proportion of 30day emergency readmissions
  • Greater hospitalisation costs

Compared to people with cystic fibrosis and haemophilia.

In terms of length of hospital stay, people with cystic fibrosis had longer hospital stays for the same conditions (sepsis and acute appendicitis) than those with sickle cell or haemophilia.

Our findings have implications for improving care after discharge, reducing preventable readmissions and lowering healthcare costs.”
