Sarah Elkourashy: Diagnostic Challenges and Management Strategies for Maternal–Fetal Outcomes in TTP

Sarah Elkourashy, Consultant in Clinical Hematology and BMT at Hamad Medical Corporation, Assistant professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of International Medical Research, adding:

”Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) in pregnancy is a rare but critical hematologic emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and immediate intervention.

It often presents with thrombocytopenia and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) and can be challenging to distinguish from other pregnancy-related MAHA such as preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome.

Early recognition is essential, as delays in treatment can significantly impact maternal and fetal outcomes.

Plasma exchange remains the cornerstone of therapy, alongside immunosuppression.

A multidisciplinary approach is key to optimizing care.

Raising awareness of TTP in pregnancy is crucial to ensure timely management and improved outcomes.

This work highlights key challenges in diagnosis, especially in differentiating TTP from other pregnancy-related thrombotic microangiopathies, as well as current approaches to management aimed at improving both maternal and fetal outcomes.”
