Sekyi-Brown Reginald: Ghana Should Include Alteplase and Tenecteplase in National Health Insurance

Sekyi-Brown Reginald, Chairperson at Early Career Pharmaceutical Group, Ghana, Franchise Manager at Pharmasymbiosis, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Samuel Darkwah et al, published in Stroke Research and Treatment:

”Rethinking Emergency Medicine in Ghana

Darkwah et al intimate that Stroke ranks amongst the top 3 causes of death and disability in Ghana in their 2025 situational analysis of Stroke in Ghana.

Ghana has to seriously consider including alteplase/tenecteplase in its National Health Insurance List.

Given the fact that it has been part of the World Health Organization’s Essential medicines list since 2019.

Although the current NHIS list captures Streptokinase; the evolution of medicine requires that our Essential Medicines List reflects the reality of modern clinical practice.

Even more importantly, the new STROKE guideline prominently recommends Alteplase and Tenecteplase makes it even more timely.

For a country that spends millions on healthcare; making a conscious effort to include such critical medicines is long overdue.”
