Wolfgang Miesbach: Potential Transmission of Haemorrhagic Risk Through Blood Transfusion
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Gargi Banerjee et al., published in The Lancet, adding:
”Haemorrhage risk appears transferrable from blood donor to recipient. A Lancet Viewpoint from a workshop convened by the MRC Prion Unit at UCL in 2024, with clinicians, epidemiologists and transfusion specialists:
Amyloid β (Aβ) propagates by templated seeding, the mechanism of the prion protein. It circulates in plasma, comes from platelets, binds to red cells. In rodents, blood from amyloid-bearing animals seeds cerebral amyloidosis in the recipient.
Denmark and Sweden, 1.27 million donors and 1.09 million recipients: recipients of red cells from donors who later had repeated intracerebral haemorrhages, the pattern typical of cerebral amyloid angiopathy, had a higher haemorrhage risk themselves. Registry data only, no imaging, no histology.
Open questions: are plasma-derived products, including factor concentrates, affected?
Not yet examined. Latency unknown.
No assay measures Aβ seeds in plasma. p-tau217 could screen donors, but the meaning of a positive result in a healthy donor is undefined.”
