Pancytopenia in Pregnancy: A Time-Critical Hematological Emergency

”Pancytopenia in pregnancy is a haematological emergency that demands immediate attention. The simultaneous reduction in all three blood cell lines (red cells, white cells, and platelets) significantly increases maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. Unlike in non-pregnant patients, the physiological changes of pregnancy can mask early symptoms, delaying diagnosis. Causes range from life-threatening TTP to severe nutritional deficiencies requiring urgent intervention.
Delayed recognition can lead to catastrophic haemorrhage, overwhelming infections, and foetal compromise. Remember: pancytopenia is never normal in pregnancy—investigate promptly, transfuse as needed, and treat the underlying cause aggressively. The dual-patient nature of obstetric medicine makes this a true time-critical emergency.”
