Postpartum Hemorrhage: From Proven Tools to Real-World Impact
AlignMNH shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Excessive bleeding after childbirth, or postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), remains a leading cause of maternal death worldwide—responsible for nearly 45,000 deaths in 2023.
A new commentary in BJOG—co-authored by our colleague Lisa Noguchi — reflects on progress since the launch of the WHO Roadmap to Combat PPH (2023–2030) and outlines why urgent, coordinated action is needed to save women’s lives.
Key highlights:
- Global maternal deaths have declined by 41% since 2000, but progress remains uneven—women in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia continue to face disproportionate risk.
- Proven solutions—like uterotonics, tranexamic acid, and the PPH treatment bundle—are still underused due to policy, financing, and supply chain gaps.
- The Roadmap has catalyzed important gains: rapid uptake of the E-MOTIVE trial evidence into WHO guidelines, adoption of PPH bundles in multiple countries, and the launch of the first World PPH Day to sustain global advocacy.
But systemic inequities, fragile financing, and geopolitical challenges still stall progress.
The message is clear: we have the tools, evidence, and solutions. What matters now is translating them into sustained action everywhere.”
