ESO Blog: Anna Gardin on Stroke Risk in the Era of Climate Extremes
Anna Gardin, Neurology Resident at Stroke Unit, “G. Martino” University Hospital, reposted from European Stroke Organisation on LinkedIn:
”Happy to contribute to the ESO blog, summarizing this cutting-edge topic
It is incredible how fragile the environment is, and it is our responsibility to preserve it, for our health and for the health of the entire planet”
Quoting European Stroke Organisation‘s post:
”New ESO Blog: Webinar Report on Understanding Stroke Risk in the Era of Climate Extremes.
Moderated by Dr Marieta Peycheva and Dr Vojtech Novotny, the session featured Dr. Vasileios Tentolouris Piperas of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and Professor Anita Arsovska of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje / Универзитет „Св. Кирил и Методиј“ во Скопје.
Read it here.
Dr. Tentolouris Piperas presented evidence linking air pollution and wildfires to increased stroke risk.
One of the main air pollutants is PM2.5, extremely small particles associated with cerebrovascular risk.
Air pollution is now recognized as the second most important modifiable risk factor globally for stroke-related disability, according to the 2025 World Stroke Organization fact sheet.
Professor Anita Arsovska discussed how temperature extremes and rapid fluctuations affect stroke occurrence.
Research consistently links both high and low temperatures to increased stroke events, underscoring climate change as a fundamental threat to human health.”
