Sara Ng on Venous Thromboembolism: An Underestimated Global Challenge
Sara Ng, Hematologist at South Western Sydney Local Health District, reposted from Stefano Barco on LinkedIn:
”Venous Thromboembolism: An Underestimated Global Challenge
Venous thromboembolism, encompassing DVT and PE, remains a leading cause of preventable death and disability worldwide.
Why this matters:
• PE can result in shock, respiratory failure, and death. Survivors often face long-term complications such as post-PE syndrome or chronic pulmonary hypertension.
• DVT carries risks of PE and post-thrombotic syndrome, affecting up to 50% of cases.
The reality:
Despite advances in diagnosis (CTPA, biomarkers) and treatment (DOACs, endovascular therapy), global estimates of VTE burden are lacking.
Many regions remain “data deserts” due to limited access to care, inconsistent coding, and under-reporting.
What needs to change:
- International collaboration to harmonise data and fill gaps
- Focus on vulnerable groups: pregnancy, racial/ethnic minorities, and those with chronic conditions
Bottom line:
VTE kills hundreds of thousands annually, yet remains under-recognised.
Accurate global data is essential to drive prevention strategies and improve outcomes.”
Quoting Stefano Barco‘s post:
”Healthcare practitioners, personnel involved in the care of patients with venous thromboembolism, and patient organizations should join together in the global recognition of and awareness on this severe condition, which causes nearly 100,000 deaths per year and is diagnosed in at least 500,000 people per year (only in Europe).
