2026 Resolution from Varun Bafna: To Make Routine Inhibitor Screening for Hemophilia a Reality in India
Varun Bafna, Hematologist, Hemato-Oncologist and BMT Physician at Dr. Bafna Star Superspeciality Clinics, shared on LinkedIn:
”New Year Resolution 2026: Let’s Prioritize Routine Inhibitor Screening for Every Hemophilia Patient in India!
As 2025 ends, I’m proud to share a meaningful step forward from our recent work in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra:
We screened nearly 100 hemophilia patients — 80 with Hemophilia A and 20 with Hemophilia B — for inhibitors.
The result? An alarming ~20% were inhibitor positive!
This high prevalence (higher than many reported national averages in India, where overall inhibitor rates in treated patients range from ~5–13% depending on region and severity) underscores a hidden challenge: many patients may be developing inhibitors without early detection, leading to poorer bleeding control, more complications, joint damage, frequent hospitalizations, and significantly higher treatment costs (bypassing agents, immune tolerance induction, etc.).
Early and routine inhibitor screening changes everything:
• Allows timely intervention (e.g., immune tolerance induction, switch to emicizumab,Concizumab or other options)
• Improves management outcomes and quality of life
• Proves cost-effective in the long run by preventing expensive bleeds and complications
WFH guidelines strongly recommend regular inhibitor screening — especially in severe cases, previously untreated patients, and periodically for all — to catch issues early.
My 2026 New Year resolution: Expand inhibitor screening to more districts and centers across India!
Let’s collaborate with Hemophilia Federation India (HFI) chapters, local hospitals, hematologists, and policymakers to make routine testing accessible, standardized, and part of every hemophilia care program.
Every person with hemophilia deserves early detection and the best possible life — free from hidden risks.
Who’s with me?
Let’s make 2026 the year of proactive, inclusive hemophilia care in India!
Happy New Year 2026 — full of hope, progress, and better outcomes for all!”
