Wolfgang Miesbach: Adding Years of Life – and Life to Years
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Nicholas A․ Koemel et al, published in The Lancet:
“Sleep plus Movement plus Diet equals Extra Years of Life.
This new UK Biobank analysis (with 59,078 participants) was published yesterday in The Lancet Group by Nick Koemel, et al. and shows how sleep, physical activity, and diet work together to shape both
- life expectancy and
- disability‑/disease‑free life expectancy (DFLE).
Each point compares a lifestyle combination with the ‘worst‘ pattern (short sleep, very low activity, poor diet):
Moving from low to moderate MVPA (moderate‑to‑vigorous physical activity: 23–42 min/day of brisk walking, cycling, or sports) already adds several years of life and DFLE.
Adding 7–8 h of sleep on top of that further increases both total and healthy years.
The biggest gains (up to almost a decade of extra life and DFLE) are seen with high MVPA (>42 min/day) + 7–8 h sleep + higher‑quality diet. Diet was assessed using a 10-item diet quality score (DQS), including intake of vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, fish, dairy, oils.
Even small concurrent changes (a few extra minutes of activity, slightly longer sleep, modest diet improvement) shift the dots upward – meaning more years gained, not just fewer events.”
