Jeyaraj Pandian: Stroke Mortality in Rural Ludhiana
Jeyaraj Pandian, President of World Stroke Organization, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”New Research Published | Stroke Mortality in Rural Ludhiana
Stroke is the leading cause of death in rural Ludhiana.
Our recently published verbal autopsy study in Cureus from the Ludhiana Rural Stroke Registry analyzed 1,182 deaths across 146 villages (population 236,266) in two blocks of Ludhiana district.
Key findings:
- Stroke accounted for 262 deaths (22.2%), making it the leading cause of mortality
- Annualized crude stroke mortality rate: 55.4 per 100,000 population
- 83.6% of stroke deaths occurred within 30 days of symptom onset
- 48.1% died within the first 7 days
- Hypertension was present in 82% of stroke deaths
These findings highlight a major gap in acute stroke care services in rural communities—contributing to early deaths and preventable long‑term disability.
The way forward:
An integrated approach combining timely acute stroke care with strong prevention strategies, especially hypertension control, is urgently needed to reduce the growing stroke burden.”
