“New Review: Thrombocytopenia in tropical infectious diseases
Thrombocytopenia is a frequent finding in major tropical infections such as malaria, dengue, and leptospirosis, but platelet count alone may not tell the full story.
Key messages from this review:
- Thrombocytopenia is common across several tropical diseases
- Platelet function, rather than absolute count, may better predict bleeding severity
- Platelet indices (e.g., immature platelet fraction) may offer added clinical value
- Prophylactic platelet transfusions show limited benefit, with most data coming from dengue studies”
