Gianluca Costamagna: Investigating the Link Between Cancer and Acute Ischemic Stroke
Gianluca Costamagna, Neurologist at Milan Polyclinic Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in International Journal of Stroke, adding:
“I’m happy to share another recently published paper investigating the link between cancer and acute ischemic stroke.
More than 10% of patients with acute ischemic stroke have concurrent active cancer. In some cases, cancer may contribute to stroke through complex interacting mechanisms that promote systemic thrombosis. Despite extensive research, the optimal antithrombotic strategy for secondary prevention at hospital discharge remains uncertain.
We investigated a cohort spanning more than two decades to evaluate antithrombotic prescribing patterns in patients with active cancer and acute ischemic stroke, as well as their associated clinical outcomes.
We hope these findings will help inform the design of future prospective studies and support counseling of patients, families, and caregivers regarding realistic expectations.”
