Shwetha Shenod: The Importance of Early Recognition to Reduce Stroke Risk in Lyme-Associated Vasculitis
Shwetha Shenod, Medical Doctor, Researcher, Former Observer at Johns Hopkins Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
”Excited to share that our article, ‘Exploring Cerebrovascular Manifestations of Lyme Disease,’ has been published in the Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology.
In this scoping review, we analyzed 90 reported patients with Lyme neuroborreliosis presenting with cerebrovascular involvement.
The most common clinical presentations included hemiparesis (51%), cranial nerve palsies (38%), and cognitive changes (26%), while imaging frequently demonstrated vasculitis (72%) and ischemic stroke (51%), involving the vertebrobasilar (30%) and MCA (27%) terriotories.
Our findings highlight how Lyme-associated vasculitis can lead to stroke and other cerebrovascular complications and, most patients showed clinical improvement following antibiotic therapy, underscoring the importance of early recognition and timely treatment.
This work emphasizes the need to consider infectious causes such as Lyme disease in cases of cryptogenic stroke, particularly in individuals from endemic regions.
Grateful to my mentor for her collaboration throughout this project.
Would love to hear your insights on cerebrovascular manifestations of infectious diseases.”
