Mohamed Sikkander Abdul Razak: Recent Breakthroughs in Stem Cell Therapy for Diabetes Treatment
Mohamed Sikkander Abdul Razak, Professor at GKM College of Engineering Technology, shared a post on LinkedIn about the recent article by Manikandan S. et al, adding:
“Recent breakthroughs in stem cell therapy are offering new hope for diabetes patients.
Chinese scientists have successfully reversed type-2 diabetes in a patient using stem-cell therapy, where healthy pancreatic cells were transplanted to mimic insulin regulation.
This innovative treatment involves taking stem cells from the patient or a donor, reprogramming them into insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, and transplanting them into the patient’s abdomen.
The transplanted cells then function like healthy pancreatic beta cells, sensing blood glucose levels and releasing insulin as needed.
While this is a groundbreaking development, experts stress that larger clinical trials are needed to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals is also conducting Phase 3 trials for an islet cell therapy, with regulatory submissions expected in 2026.
Stem cell therapy has shown promise in reducing insulin requirements in type 2 diabetes patients, but more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety for type 1 diabetes.”
