David Kirk: Four Things You Should Know About Platelet Donation
David Kirk, Executive Healthcare Leader, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For those that have been hesitant to donate platelets, here are 4 things that you should know:
- Platelets are in high demand because they expire in just 5–7 days.
- Crucial for cancer patients, organ transplants, and surgery.
- Because you receive your red blood cells back, you may feel less tired than after a whole blood donation.
- A platelet donation can provide a full dose of platelets for a patient, sometimes up to three patients. The Red Cross app actually tells me the hospital where my donation went!
The Red Cross of Idaho, Montana and East Oregon is an awesome organization and their volunteers do an excellent job making you feel comfortable and the process easy.
When time permits, I volunteer to donate platelets and recently received my ‘3 Gallon’ badge.
So please join me and get out and help when you can!”
