Eoin McGrath: Common Language for Blood Transfer Across Organizations

Eoin McGrath, Executive Director at ICCBBA, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Nadira Frescalinea et al., adding:

“A letter published in The Lancet Group on 6 March 2026, titled ‘Call to enhance civilian and military blood preparedness,’ addresses the urgent need to improve our supply capacity for potential large-scale international emergencies or conflicts.

It emphasizes the importance of ‘international interoperability between military and civilian blood systems,’ which necessitates standardized nomenclature.

The ISBT128 Standard is part of the solution to this challenge, having been developed with standardized terminology since its inception in the mid-1990s.

This standard offers a common language that can be utilized by any compliant system, facilitating the transfer of blood between organizations, regardless of language differences.

Additionally, efficiency is improved through standardized machine-readable unique identifiers and product description codes.

Many European blood services are already utilizing ISBT 128-compliant systems, showcasing a significant pool of knowledge and expertise in implementing information standards.

ICCBBA is committed to supporting both current and new users, as well as other stakeholders, to maximize the benefits of ISBT 128, which is now entering its third decade.
