Riccardo Mazza: Do Weight, BMI, and Renal Function Independently Predict Acute Events in NVAF Patients on DOACs?
Riccardo Mazza, Cardiology Resident at University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
“DOACs: Not weight.
Not renal function.
It’s plasma levels.
In our latest research letter, we addressed a key clinical question:
Do weight, BMI, and renal function independently predict acute events in NVAF patients on DOACs?
Short answer: they do not – once drug exposure is accounted for.
Our findings suggest a mediated effect: renal function influences outcomes through modulation of DOAC plasma levels, rather than acting as an independent determinant.
Clinical implications:
Weight and renal function remain essential for dose selection.
However, when it comes to actual patient risk, the key determinant may be:
- true pharmacological exposure
In other words:
We dose based on patient characteristics – but outcomes are driven by drug levels.
