Maha Othman: Students Bringing Biomedical Chemistry to Life Through a Mini Symposium
Maha Othman, Research Co-Lead at the CanVECTOR Research Network and Co-Chair of the SSC on Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Chemistry and biochemistry have always been among the more challenging university courses.
But when these disciplines are taught through the lens of Biomedical Chemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics, the complexity deepens-bridging foundational science with real clinical application.
And yet, my Year 2 BScN students St. Lawrence College rose to the challenge.
Through a Mini-Symposium, they brought this demanding science to life in a real-world, conference-style experience. Working in teams, they developed scientific posters translating complex biochemical concepts into meaningful clinical and laboratory insights—demonstrating how core science informs patient care.
A sincere thank you to Upper-year student course mentors Jordan Harry Jayan Anpalahan Makenna Marlow, guest Ty Conlin who served as judges, and to peers whose evaluations fostered collaboration, critical thinking, and engagement.
I am incredibly proud of these students. They showed not only strong scientific understanding, but also the confidence to communicate their work-an essential skill for future nursing professionals.
Hosted at the Innovation Hub on the Kingston campus, this event reflects St. Lawrence College commitment to experiential, student-centred learning, where students move beyond theory to application.
Moments like these remind us that when students are given the opportunity and mentored, they don’t just learn science-they live it, apply it, and elevate it.
Lovely to be featured at SLC Communication newsletter.”
