Nour Al-Mozain: Highlights on Therapeutic Plateletpheresis in Thrombocytosis
Nour Al-Mozain, Hemopathologist, Consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Transfusion Medicine Reviews։
“Excited to share this collaborative important multicenter work on therapeutic plateletpheresis (TPP) in thrombocytosis, now published in Transfusion Medicine Reviews.
Highlights
- TPP remains a safe, rapid but transient intervention, best utilized as a bridge in symptomatic thrombocytosis while awaiting cytoreductive therapy
- Most patients treated had MPN-related thrombocytosis, often presenting with neurologic symptoms or thrombotic/bleeding complications.
- While platelet reduction goals were commonly achieved, clear outcome benefit beyond count reduction remains uncertain
Clinical takeaway:
TPP should be used in a guideline-informed manner, with emphasis on clinical symptoms rather than platelet count alone, and always integrated within a broader cytoreductive strategy.”
