Shiv Sundar: Role of the Clinical Pharmacist in Obstetric Practice
Shiv Sundar, Cardiology Clinical Pharmacist at PSG Hospitals, Portfolio Development Team Member at Federation of Clinical Pharmacists in India, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Missed my recent session on Clinical Pharmacy in Obstetrics and Gynecology?
Here’s a simplified version.
As a follow up to my recent session, I’m sharing a concise and structured overview of the key concepts discussed.
Obstetric pharmacotherapy is unique and complex because every decision directly impacts two lives: the mother and the fetus.
In this document, I’ve highlighted how Clinical Pharmacists can contribute meaningfully in OG practice, particularly in:
- Medication safety in pregnancy
- Teratogenic risk identification and prevention
- Dose individualization based on physiological changes
- Management of high – risk medications (e.g., anticoagulants, antiepileptics)
- Antibiotic stewardship in obstetric infections
- Patient counselling to improve adherence and safety
One key takeaway:
Clinical Pharmacists play a critical role in ensuring safe, evidence – based pharmacotherapy in obstetrics, where precision is essential.
This PDF is a brief attempt to make these concepts simple, practical, and easy to understand.
I hope this adds value to fellow healthcare professionals and students exploring this area.
What’s your perspective on integrating Clinical Pharmacy into OG practice?
Feel free to share this with someone who might find it useful.”
