Carmen Ruiz: First Arterial Mechanical Thrombectomy in New Zealand Using the ARTIX System
Carmen Ruiz, Senior Medical Officer at Nelson Marlborough Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Proud to share a milestone: Performing New Zealand’s first arterial mechanical thrombectomy using the ARTIX system by Inari Medical.
The case involved a patient with an occluded femoral below-knee popliteal bypass graft of at least 4 weeks’ duration. Without access to thrombolysis, an open approach would have required a more extensive procedure, with long incisions and a prolonged hospital stay-challenging given the patient’s comorbidities.
Instead, we were able to treat using minimally invasive mechanical thrombectomy and outflow angioplasty. The patient is now recovering well and is likely to be discharged tomorrow-a stark contrast to the several days of recovery typically expected with open surgery.
The ARTIX device performed exceptionally well, including providing effective options for managing embolisation into the profunda (see image), which added an extra layer of confidence during the procedure.
This was very much a team effort, and I want to particularly acknowledge Dr Dan Holbert (IR), who was a major contributor throughout the case. Collaboration between interventional radiology and vascular surgery is essential and this case highlighted just how powerful that partnership can be. I’m also grateful to the Inari Medical representatives, Laxman Popli and Jessica Sanders for their support.
Innovation in our field continues to evolve rapidly, and it’s incredibly rewarding to bring new, less invasive options to patients locally-reducing recovery time while maintaining excellent outcomes.”
