Thomas Rocco Jr: Scaling Primary Care to Reduce Global Mortality in Hypertension
Thomas Rocco Jr, Clinical Professor Emeritus of Medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As we approach World Hypertension Day, Resolve to Save Lives has posted this message:
Prioritizing NCDs requires treating hypertension not just as a medical condition, but as a public health emergency that demands a massive, coordinated scale-up of primary care services.
Global health is facing a critical challenge with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension, which remains the leading global risk factor for mortality.
Despite its impact, there is a massive gap between prevalence and effective treatment.
Dr. Renu Garg highlights a staggering ‘treatment gap’ in global health.
Scale:
Hypertension affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide.
Management:
Only about 20 percent of those affected have their condition under control.
Strategies for Prioritization
To effectively address NCDs, the global health community must pivot from reactive care to systemic prevention.
Primary Care Integration:
Moving hypertension management into routine primary health care rather than specialized clinics to increase accessibility.
Standardized Treatment Protocols:
Implementing simple, evidence-based medication regimens that can be managed by non-physician health workers (task-sharing).
Reliable Supply Chains:
Ensuring a steady, affordable supply of essential blood pressure medications.
Data-Driven Monitoring:
Utilizing patient registries to track control rates and identify communities that are falling behind.”
