Gashaw Arega: Celebrating World Hemophilia Day in Ethiopia

Gashaw Arega, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Addis Ababa University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Celebrating World Hemophilia Day in Ethiopia

On this World Hemophilia Day, it was a pleasure to serve as a panelist and be with children and their families on this important occasion.

Although World Hemophilia Day is globally marked every April 17, Ethiopia proudly celebrated it today, May 3, 2026 – bringing together patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

We are grateful for the support of the World Federation of Hemophilia in strengthening hemophilia care and supporting patients in Ethiopia.

Hemophilia is a genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly, leading to prolonged bleeding, joint damage, and life-threatening complications if untreated.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can save lives and prevent disability.

An estimated of over 6,000 people are living with hemophilia in Ethiopia, yet fewer than 1,000 are diagnosed and receiving treatment-highlighting a critical gap in care.

We also recognize the dedication of the Ethiopian Hemophilia Society (EHS) in advocating for patients and improving access to care.

The event emphasized the urgent need for establishing a ‘Comprehensive Hemophilia Treatment Center in Ethiopia‘ and strengthening national systems for diagnosis and long-term management.

Together, awareness, diagnosis, and access to treatment can transform lives.”
