Wolfgang Miesbach: Hidden Proteins Discovered in the Human Genome
Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Eric W. Deutsch et al., published in Nature, adding:
“Hidden Proteins Discovered in the Human Genome.
A landmark Nature study reveals ~1,800 newly detected microproteins – expanding what we thought we knew about human biology:
Before: ~20,000 known protein-coding genes
Now: 1,800 plus additional ‘microproteins’ detected – too small to find with traditional methods
How They Were Found
- Mass spectrometry: 3.5 billion spectra analyzed
- Immunopeptidomics: Detected proteins displayed on cell surfaces (240M spectra)
- CRISPR screening: Proved some are essential for cell survivals
Why This is Important
- Cancer immunotherapy: These microproteins appear on tumor cells – new treatment targets
- Drug development: Some control cell division and DNA repair
- Genetic disease: May explain conditions with no known causes
New Category: ‘Peptideins’
Proteins we can now detect but don’t fully understand yet – opening new research frontiers”
