Mildred Lundgren: We Must Talk About the Invisible Causes of Stroke
Mildred Lundgren, Chairman of the Board at HHT Sweden, shared on LinkedIn:
”Today is European Stroke Awareness Day – and we must talk about the invisible causes of stroke.
Did you know that a stroke can affect anyone, regardless of age?
For those living with the rare disease HHT (Morbus Osler), the risk of stroke is a constant reality due to ‘nests’ (AVMs) in the lungs that can allow blood clots to travel directly to the brain.
Meet Lena.
As a child, she suffered from frequent nosebleeds but was simply told to ‘eat more oranges.’
In her youth, she suffered six minor strokes, but doctors dismissed them as stress or trapped nerves because she was considered ‘too young’ for a stroke.
It was only much later that lung AVMs caused by HHT were discovered to be the cause.
The danger isn’t limited to adults.
Lena’s son suffered a TIA (a warning stroke) when he was just 14 years old.
At HHT Sverige, we want to remind you today:
- Listen to the patient: Frequent nosebleeds combined with neurological symptoms should be taken very seriously.
- No one is too young: A stroke can occur at any time in life if lung AVMs are left untreated.
- Expert care saves lives: Screening and treatment (embolization) by specialist teams are crucial to preventing life-altering complications.
Help us spread knowledge so that more people receive the correct diagnosis in time.
