Sharon Bukola Afolabi: Why Standing Up Is a Bigger Workout for Your Heart Than You Think

Sharon Bukola Afolabi, Volunteer Writer at Patient-Doctor Forum Nigeria, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Standing up is actually a bit more demanding for your heart than lying down.

Here’s why.

Your heart doesn’t just pump the same way all the time, it actually adjusts depending on your body position.

When you’re lying down, things are generally easier.

Blood is more evenly distributed, and your heart doesn’t have to work as much against gravity to maintain circulation.

But the moment you stand up? Everything shifts.

Gravity pulls blood toward your lower body, and your cardiovascular system has to compensate to maintain blood flow to your brain and the rest of your body

. Your nervous system detects the pressure change and responds within seconds.

Your heart rate may increase slightly, and your blood vessels constrict just enough to keep your blood pressure stable so you don’t feel dizzy or lightheaded.

All of this happens quickly, quietly, without you even noticing.

It’s one of those small reminders that your body is always working in the background, keeping things steady for you.

Have you ever paid attention to how your body feels after standing for a long time vs lying down?”
