Ilenia Calcaterra: Impact of Pain on Severe Haemophilia A Patients Receiving Emicizumab Prophylaxis
Ilenia Calcaterra, Researcher at University of Naples Federico II, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Haemophilia, adding:
”I am pleased to share our new publication in Haemophilia:
‘Use of the Multidimensional Haemophilia Pain Questionnaire (MHPQ) in Patients With Severe Haemophilia A Treated With Emicizumab: A Pilot Cross-Sectional, Single-Centre Study’
In this pilot study, we used the Multidimensional Haemophilia Pain Questionnaire (MHPQ) to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and functional impact of pain in adults with severe haemophilia A receiving Emicizumab prophylaxis.
Despite effective bleed control, pain remained a clinically relevant burden: 77.8% of patients reported pain within the previous 12 months, most commonly involving the ankles and knees, with an impact on daily activities, walking ability, mood, and enjoyment of life.
These findings suggest that, in the non-factor prophylaxis era, haemophilia-related pain is not exclusively bleeding-driven, but reflects a more complex and multidimensional phenotype.
Integrating structured pain assessment tools into routine haemophilia care may help better identify patients’ needs and support more personalized, multidisciplinary management strategies.
My sincere thanks to all co-authors, patients, and patient associations who continue to support clinical research in haemophilia.”
