Ahmed Koriesh: Persistent Delays, Higher Mortality, and Opportunities for Improvement for In-Hospital Stroke
Ahmed Koriesh, Director of Hospital Neurology Service at Cleveland Clinic Florida, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Stroke, adding:
”Check out our new publication in Stroke examining in-hospital stroke in the modern thrombectomy era using the national GWTG-Stroke registry.
Analyzing nearly 5 million ischemic stroke admissions from 2,542 US hospitals, we found:
- In-hospital stroke remained associated with >2x higher mortality (aOR 2.27)
- Recognition-to-CT was substantially delayed (51 vs 18 min)
- Mechanical thrombectomy rates more than doubled over time
- Defect-free stroke care improved dramatically from 60.8% to 88.4%
Despite major advances in EVT and stroke systems of care, in-hospital stroke remains a major challenge and opportunity for improvement.
