Stephanie Becker: ESOC 2026 Highlights Are Now Live in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe
Stephanie Becker, Senior Editor at The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, shared on LinkedIn:
”Exciting advances in stroke research were front and centre at ESOC 2026 in Maastricht, where more than 4000 delegates from 96 countries gathered to discuss the future of stroke prevention, intervention, and recovery.
Our conference highlights are now live in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.
I was delighted to attend this conference held by the European Stroke Organisation, meeting enthusiastic and driven researchers and hearing about the latest research in the field that could help shape the next generation of stroke care.
Some standout findings included:
- The HOPE trial, showing that personalised blood pressure targets after thrombectomy may significantly improve functional recovery after acute ischaemic stroke.
- New OCEANIC-STROKE analyses suggesting that asundexian not only reduces recurrent stroke risk, but may also lessen stroke severity and disability.
- The DISTALS trial, demonstrating promising results for a novel low-profile stent-retriever designed specifically for distal vessel occlusions.
- ATILA trial findings showing that low-dose tirofiban reduced acute in-stent thrombosis by more than half following thrombectomy and carotid stenting.
- The ATLAS meta-analysis, providing compelling evidence that patients with large-core ischaemic stroke can still benefit from endovascular thrombectomy — challenging long-standing assumptions in the field.
What stood out most at this year’s meeting was the momentum across stroke research: from refining thrombectomy strategies to improving secondary prevention and expanding treatment eligibility for patients previously thought unlikely to benefit.
A fascinating and energising few days for everyone working in cerebrovascular medicine.
