Wolfgang Miesbach: Exploring the Role of Micronutrients in Healthy Longevity

Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“New RCT evidence says: possibly yes.

A large-scale randomized controlled trial — the COSMOS study — offers evidence that daily multivitamin–multimineral supplementation may modestly decelerate epigenetic aging in older adults:

Among 958 participants (mean age 70 years), 2 years of daily Centrum Silver — a standard multivitamin — significantly slowed the rise of well-validated epigenetic aging clocks (biological ‘speedometers’ derived from DNA methylation patterns that predict mortality risk).

Importantly, vitamins improved aging biomarkers: telomere length, and markers of cellular senescence, immune activation, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

The benefit was strongest in those with already accelerated biological aging at baseline — suggesting the greatest geroprotective effect in those who may need it most.

Interestingly, cocoa flavanol extract (500 mg/day) showed no significant effect on any of the five epigenetic clocks tested.

However, whether improvements in epigenetic clocks translate into meaningful clinical outcomes still needs to be confirmed in longer follow-up studies.

The authors propose that correcting subclinical micronutrient deficiencies may be the key driver — with likely even greater effects in less well-nourished populations.”
