Maxime Dely: A Simple but Powerful Indicator of Platelet Quality

Maxime Dely, Therapeutic Solutions Sales Consultant at Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“When platelets ‘dance’:

the swirling phenomenon

In laboratories, some indicators are still surprisingly human.

Swirling is one of them.

In a platelet concentrate, when the bag is gently agitated, viable platelets create a visible light swirl effect, almost like a small dance.

This movement is an essential sign:

it shows that the platelets have kept their shape and, most importantly, their effectiveness.

What’s most surprising?

This quality check still relies mainly on the human eye.

No ultra-complex machine: experience and observation remain key.

On the other hand, a swirling score of 0 indicates that the platelets are no longer sufficiently viable.

In other words:

if they no longer ‘dance’, the platelet concentrate cannot be used for transfusion.

Behind this subtle phenomenon lies a real indicator of quality and transfusion safety.

And you, did you know that such a simple movement could reveal so much about the quality of a blood product?”
