”My First Clinical Shadowing Experience
Last Thursday (May 28, 2026), I had the incredible opportunity to complete my first shadowing experience through the Suffolk County Medical Society, and it was truly transformative.
I spent the day with Dr. Caruso, a hematologist whose depth of knowledge and dedication to his patients left a lasting impression on me.
He walked me through the fundamentals of hematology using real patient cases, ranging from deep vein thrombosis and the physiology of blood clots to the roles of platelets and the three major blood cell types in Hepatitis C.
He even touched on the chemistry and fluid dynamics behind blood pressure and clotting.
As he explained each concept, I found myself naturally connecting his lessons to ideas from physics, calculus, chemistry, and even meteorology.
Although these connections were my own, his clarity as a teacher made it easy to see how different scientific principles intersect in medicine.
It reminded me how interconnected science truly is and how much I love learning across disciplines.
What stood out most was his humility and commitment to continuous learning. Despite his four decades of experience, he still approaches each case with curiosity and determination. His patients clearly adore him; one even told me, ‘If you ever become a doctor, be like Dr. Caruso.’ I responded with humility, saying that it would be my honor to follow in his footsteps.
This experience strengthened my desire to pursue medicine and gave me a clearer sense of the path I hope to follow.
I’m deeply grateful to Dr. Caruso for accepting me as his student and teaching me so much, and also to the Suffolk County Medical Society for organizing this opportunity.
I hope to continue shadowing during the summer break and gain more experience in patient care.
Overall, it was an unforgettable day and the first of many arduous steps toward my future in healthcare.”
