Filimon Dagnew Bezabih: SNMMI Honors 18F-GP1 PET Imaging for Innovation in Thrombosis Detection
Filimon Dagnew Bezabih, PET/CT Imaging and Theranostics Fellow at Univesity of Pretoria, Steve Beko Academic Hospital and NuMeRI, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Exciting news from the SNMMI 2026 Annual Meeting!
A novel PET radiotracer — 18F-GP1 — has just been awarded the prestigious Henry N. Wagner, Jr.
Image of the Year for its ability to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism in a single whole-body scan.
What makes this a game-changer?
- Directly visualizes active blood clots — not just structural changes like conventional ultrasound or CT
- 95 percent sensitivity and 92 percent specificity for proximal DVT
- Identifies clots in both the legs AND lungs in one scan
- Well-tolerated with no adverse events reported
DVT affects nearly 900,000 Americans every year, and delays in diagnosis can be life-threatening when clots travel to the lungs.
The ability to image the entire thrombus burden in a single session could meaningfully change how we diagnose and monitor these patients.
With Phase 3 trials on the horizon, this tracer could become part of routine clinical practice within the next 5–10 years.
The future of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging continues to inspire.”
