”One of the most underrated interventions in stroke recovery might already be available to every patient: exercise.
A recent study from our research group at University Hospital Münster, published in Nature Communications, showed that physical activity facilitates post-stroke recovery by reducing neuronal hyperexcitability; mediated through IL-10 signaling. In other words: exercise doesn’t just help patients feel better.
It changes the brain at a molecular level.
Having spent 16 months on a stroke unit, I’ve seen firsthand how much the gap between bench and bedside still matters.
Translational research like this is what bridges it.
What excites me most: findings like these open doors not just for rehabilitation, but for entirely new therapeutic targets in stroke recovery.
Curious what others think: are we doing enough to integrate exercise science into neurological treatment protocols?”
