“Sharing a discussion with Ramya Raman, vice president of The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and women’s health advocate, about heavymenstrualbleeding (HMB).

I am grateful for the conversations raising awareness about HMB, which affects 1 in 4 reproductive-aged women.

The International HMB Day, organised by the Bleed Better charity, aims to support both clinicians and the community in understanding this condition.

General practitioners have a crucial leadership role in addressing HMB, a common yet treatable medical condition.”

“Heavy menstrual bleeding affects 1 in 4 women of reproductive age.

Yet one of the biggest challenges is that many women don’t realise what they’re experiencing is a medical condition at all.

Planning life around your period.

Avoiding social events.

Living with exhaustion from iron deficiency.

As GPs, we are often the first point of contact and have an important role in recognising symptoms, investigating underlying causes, and helping women access effective treatment options.

Awareness changes conversations.”
