Shadi Tabibian: Normal Tests, Abnormal Bleeding
Shadi Tabibian, Deputy of research at Blood Diseases Research Centers in Iran University of Medical Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Bleeding Disorders of Unknown Cause (BDUC) represent one of the most challenging areas in contemporary haemostasis.
Although patients experience clinically significant bleeding manifestation, including heavy menstrual bleeding, mucocutaneous bleeding, easy bruising, and procedure-related haemorrhage, standard haemostatic investigations frequently fail to identify an underlying defect.
As a result, many individuals, particularly women, face prolonged diagnostic delay, repeated specialist consultations, fragmented care pathways, and substantial psychosocial burden.
Emerging evidence suggests that BDUC is not a benign condition.
Patients report impaired quality of life, iron deficiency, reduced physical functioning, anxiety, and significant impacts on education, employment, and social participation. Importantly, the absence of a laboratory diagnosis does not equate to the absence of disease.
This infographic summarizes the multidimensional burden of BDUC in women, highlighting the interconnected relationship between bleeding symptoms, diagnostic uncertainty, healthcare challenges, physical consequences, and psychological impact.
Greater awareness, standardized diagnostic pathways, comprehensive phenotyping, and continued research into currently unexplained bleeding phenotypes are essential to improve outcomes for this underserved patient population.”
