Chokri Ben Lamine: EHA26 – SCD Curative Therapy Pathway
Chokri Ben Lamine, Assistant Consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, shared a post on X:
“EHA26 – SCD Curative Therapy Pathway
EHA-SWG and EBMT-HWP joint recommendations highlight who should be considered for:
- Allogeneic HCT
- Cell and gene therapy
in sickle cell disease
Key clinical logic:
- Confirm HbSS and severe HbSβ⁰ genotype
- Assess for severe clinical presentation
- If HLA-matched family donor is available, proceed to allo-HCT assessment
- If no matched donor is available and eligibility criteria are met, assess for gene therapy at a transplant center.
Practical message:
Curative therapy in SCD is becoming algorithm-driven, but still needs expert individualized review:
- genotype
- disease severity
- donor availability
- age r
- egulatory and scientific updates
- patient-centered risk–benefit discussion
