Srishti Goyal։ India’s Blood Donation Journey – Looking Beyond the Numbers
Srishti Goyal, Former Blood Bank Technologist at Indian Red Cross Society (National Headquarters, New Delhi, India), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today, on World Donor Day, seeing so many conversations about blood donation made me think about India’s progress in this area.
Back in 2014, India collected 10.8 million blood donations; in 2024, it collected about 14.6 million.
That seems like huge growth, and it is.
Why?
In 2014, the Indian population was 1.31 billion; by 2024, it had increased to 1.45 billion.
When adjusted for population, the blood donation rate also increased from 8.2 to 10.1 donations per 1000 population, and that’s impressive.
It happened because of people who donate, who motivate others around them, and the healthcare team working behind the scenes.
But while looking at these numbers, one thought kept coming to mind.
But what about demand?
If the need for blood is growing too, is our progress enough?
I don’t know the answer yet.
But for today, let’s celebrate and motivate the donor who helped make this progress possible.
And maybe continue the conversation about how we can build a regular blood donation practice.”
