Paritosh Garg: From Replacing Platelets to Stimulating Platelet Production
Paritosh Garg, Associate Consultant at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, India, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Raoel Maan et al., published in Drugs, adding:
“Thrombocytopenia in chronic liver disease is not just a platelet-count problem.
It influences procedural planning, antiviral therapy, transfusion decisions, and thrombotic risk assessment.
This review highlights an important shift in supportive care:
From replacing platelets to stimulating platelet production.
Thrombopoietin receptor agonists opened a new therapeutic space, but the key message remains clinical judgment.
In CLD, the question is not only:
‘Can we increase the platelet count?’
It is also:
‘At what thrombotic cost, and in which patient?’
A practical reminder that supportive care in hematology is never ‘supportive only’ — it often determines whether definitive care can safely proceed.”
