Shumaila Ishad: Acute Coronary Syndrome – When Every Minute Matters
Shumaila Ishad, Final-Year MBBS Student at Isra University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS): When Every Minute Matters
A patient walks into the emergency room with crushing chest pain, sweating, and shortness of breath.
Is it just indigestion, or is the heart crying for help?
Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) represents a spectrum of life-threatening conditions caused by sudden reduction of blood flow to the heart muscle.
It includes:
- Unstable Angina
- NSTEMI
- STEMI
The underlying culprit is often the same:
- Atherosclerotic plaque rupture
- Thrombus formation
- Coronary artery blockage
- Myocardial ischemia or infarction
Key clinical clues
- Central crushing chest pain
- Radiation to arm, neck, jaw, or back
- Diaphoresis (sweating)
- Dyspnea
- Nausea and vomiting
Remember:
- Time is Muscle
Every minute of delayed treatment means more myocardium is lost.
Diagnosis Relies On:
- Clinical assessment
- ECG changes
- Cardiac biomarkers (Troponin)
A Simple Rule:
- Troponin normal – Unstable Angina
- Troponin elevated and No ST elevation – NSTEMI
- Troponin elevated and ST elevation – STEMI
Early recognition, rapid intervention, and timely reperfusion can dramatically improve outcomes and save lives.
As future physicians and healthcare professionals, our responsibility is not only to diagnose ACS but to recognize it before irreversible damage occurs.
The heart rarely gets a second chance – act fast.”
