Ashwin Nikode: World Sickle Cell Day 2026 – Continue to Pose a Significant Public Health Challenge in India

Ashwin Nikode, City Coordinator at Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India – FOGSI, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“World Sickle Cell Day 2026 | 19 June

Hemoglobinopathies, including Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia, continue to pose a significant public health challenge in India.

However, timely screening and appropriate counselling can help prevent the birth of affected children.

On the occasion of World Sickle Cell Day, we are proud to share an awareness video developed under Project_MUKTA with the support of FOGSI and Yavatmal Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (YOGS), highlighting the importance of:

  • Universal HPLC screening for every pregnant woman at the first antenatal visit
  • Partner screening when the mother is identified as a carrier
  • Early genetic counselling for at-risk couples
  • Timely prenatal diagnosis when indicated

As emphasized in the recent FOGSI Good Clinical Practice Recommendations (GCPR) on Hemoglobinopathies, HPLC remains the preferred method for antenatal screening and should become an integral part of routine antenatal care.

Together, let us advocate:

‘Every ANC Woman. Every First Visit. One HPLC Test’.”
