Ayoub Ait Lahcen: Can We Reduce Blood Transfusions in Cardiac Surgery Before the Operation Even Begins?

Ayoub Ait Lahcen, Physician at CHU Mohammed VI Marrakech, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, adding:

“Can we reduce blood transfusions in cardiac surgery before the operation even begins?

Our newly published systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery suggests that preoperative IV iron may help do exactly that in non-anaemic patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Among 338 patients from randomized controlled trials, preoperative IV iron was associated with:

  • 38% lower risk of postoperative blood transfusion
  • Fewer transfused blood units
  • Better hemoglobin recovery at 4–6 weeks
  • No increase in infection or mortality

Proud to contribute to this work alongside an outstanding team of collaborators.”
