Shamee Shastry: Lewis Antigen Elution and the Challenge of False-Negative Reactions
Shamee Shastry, Professor and Head of the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Transfusion and Apheresis Science, adding:
”Are you an immunohematologist?
This observation may change your interpretation!
A rare but critical observation from our Centre of Excellence in Immunohematology at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal:
Elution of Lewis antigens from reagent red cells can lead to antibody misidentification and diagnostic ambiguity.
What this means:
- Not all panel cell antigens are stable
- False-negative reactions can mislead interpretation
- Quality control must go beyond routine checks.”
